Dwellings can become infested with bed bugs in a variety of ways.  Bed bugs and their eggs can be "hitchhiked in" on pets or on clothing and luggage.  Infested items such as furniture or clothing in nearby dwellings can lead to an infestation if there are easy routes through duct work or false ceilings.  Wild animals like bats or birds can deposit bed bugs in a dwelling.  Bed bugs, like roaches, are transferred by clothing, luggage, or a person's body.

A trained Pest Management Professional will know the
telltail signs of the presence of bed bugs.

When treating an infestation these are some of the steps a Pest Management Professional may take:

Because bed bugs prefer to hide in undisturbed areas, it is important to contact a professional well educated in the habits of these pests. Experienced pest management professionals will perform a thorough sweep of the building. These experts have the knowledge and experience to locate bed bugs not only in the mattress and box spring, but also in often overlooked areas such as the headboard, baseboard, bed frame, furniture, wall sockets, behind mirrors or pictures, and other hiding spots. Carbon dioxide may be used to draw or flush bed bugs out of hiding spots during inspections.  Often, pest management professionals prefer to wear white while inspecting to identify and ensure that these well regarded "hitch-hikers" are not transported elsewhere.

It may not be necessary to simply discard mattresses and box springs indiscriminately just because of the presence of bed bugs.  Mattresses and box springs in otherwise good condition may be suitably vacuumed, steam cleaned, or treated for bed bugs and further protected by suitable encasements produced for this purpose.  Use high quality mattress encasements or covers that are Bed Bug Certified (BBC) to seal bed bugs in and take away the multiple hiding places.
